Terms of Use

Extent("the app") is an application for macOS published by xfanta and distributed through the App Store. By downloading or using the app you agree to these terms and to Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA), which governs your license to use the app.

License

Extent is licensed, not sold. You get a personal, non-exclusive license to install and use the app on the Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store terms and the Apple EULA. The app and its source code are proprietary; you may not decompile, reverse-engineer, redistribute, or resell the app except as allowed by applicable law or the EULA.

Reading and writing

Reading disks is free. Writing to ext4 disks is unlocked by a one-time in-app purchase, bought through and refunded by Apple under the App Store terms. The purchase is tied to your Apple Account, works on the Macs signed in to it, and can be shared through Family Sharing.

Writing stays off until you turn it on for a particular disk. Extent refuses to write to a file system it cannot keep consistent — one without a journal, one using features it does not support, or one carrying damage recorded by Linux — and tells you which of those it is.

Your data — keep backups

You retain all rights to the files on your disks. Extent writes through the file system's journal, the way Linux does, so that a disk disconnected mid-write comes back consistent, and every release is tested against Linux's own tools. Even so, this is software that changes file systems: keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose, and eject a disk before unplugging it.

No warranty

The app is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. It is not endorsed by or affiliated with the Linux kernel project or any distribution, and it is not a repair tool: a damaged file system should be checked on Linux with e2fsck.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, xfanta shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or business, arising from the use of or inability to use the app.

Open-source components

Extent contains code derived from permissively licensed sources — FreeBSD's ext2fs among them — and ships the Inter Tight typeface (SIL Open Font License) and Lucide icons (ISC). Every notice is reproduced in the app, under Extent › About Extent.
